This is the third part in a seven-part series entitled, ARE ROMAN CATHOLICS CHRISTIANS OR HERETICS. There are seven (7) major differences between Roman Catholic Doctrine and Christianity. They are a different Church, Authority, Jesus, Gospel, Mary, View of Sin, and a different Path to Eternity.
3. Christians and Roman Catholics Have a Different Jesus
CATHOLIC JESUS STILL ON CROSS | CHRISTIAN JESUS HAS RISEN |
Jesus Died on the Cross and Remains | Jesus Died on a Cross and Rose from the Dead |
Jesus Offers a Bloodless Sacrifice Daily, without the Shedding of Blood there is No Forgiveness of Sins | Jesus Offers a Blood Sacrifice One Time for the Forgiveness of Sins, past-present-future. |
Jesus is offered Over and Over, Millions of Times During the Eucharist | Jesus Offered One Sacrifice Once, for All Sins, for All Who Believe In Him, for All Time |
Substantiation-Priests Call Jesus off the Cross at Mass and Offer His Real Body and Blood to Forgive Past Sins | Communion-All Remember the Cross and Resurrection Symbolically by Taking Wine and Bread to Represent Jesus |
Solo Christo (Solus Christus): Christ Alone
“Solus Christus expresses the biblical conviction that there is ‘one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus’ (1 Tim 2:5) and that therefore ‘there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved’ (Acts 4:12). Christ’s identity is absolutely exclusive and his work entirely sufficient. We have no need, then, for any other prophet to provide us with a new revelation, any other priest to mediate between us and God, or any other king to rule Christ’s Church. Christ alone stands at the center of God’s eternal purposes, Christ alone is the object of our saving faith, and therefore Christ alone must stand at the very center of our theology.
One of the last things Jesus said to His Apostles was do not be afraid, I am going away, to prepare a place for you in my Father's house, and I will come back for you. Then Thomas said we don't know where you are going. (John 14:1-5). If this wasn't enough for them to comprehend He gives them a brand new truth about His exclusivity as Messiah. This one verse makes Jesus the most hated man on the planet and excludes Him from every Religion.
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me" (John 14:6).
According to Paul, Peter, and Jesus Himself, there is no other name that can save you, only one mediator between you and God, and only one-way truth and life that brings you to the Father. This is the exclusivity of Jesus. It is only Jesus who offers these blessings to you of salvation.
What Do Catholics Believe About Jesus Alone?
What do the Catholics say about Jesus being the only way to salvation? Anyone who believes this is an Anathema, accursed or consigned to damnation or destruction or “eternally condemned.” If you believe that only Jesus saves you in the Catholic Church then you will be excommunicated, kicked out of the church, and called an Anathema. Therefore, every born-again Christ is dammed to Hell. (Council of Trent, Canon XI., pg. 46)
"If anyone saith, that men are justified, either by the sole imputation of the justice of Christ or by the sole remission of sins, to the exclusion of the grace and the charity which is poured forth in their hearts by the Holy Ghost and is inherent in them; or even that the grace, whereby we are justified, is only the favor of God; let him be anathema."
Jesus is Sufficient and Every Christian Is;
Set Free by His Truth | So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly My disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31-32). |
Born Again by the Seed of His Word | "for you have been born again not of seed which is perishable, but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God" (1 Peter 1:23). |
Cleansed From Sin by Jesus' Blood | "but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin" (1 John 1:7). |
Forgiven by His Substitutionary Atonement | The innocent Son of God stood in the place of guilty sinners and bore the righteous wrath of God for the sins of His people so that the guilty could be forgiven and declared righteous. (2 Cor 5:21). |
Redeemed From the Curse of the Law | "Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”— so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham would come to the Gentiles so that we would receive the promise of the Spirit through faith" (Galatians 3:13-14). |
Justified by His Imputed Righteousness | "He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him" (2 Corinthians 5:21). |
Saved On the Bases of Grace | "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not a result of works, so that no one may boast (Eph 2:8-9). |
Reconciled to God Through His Mediation | "Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation,(2 Corinthians 5:18). |
Eternally Secure by Jesus' Promises | "Everything that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I certainly will not cast out. And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that of everything that He has given Me I will lose nothing, but will raise it up on the last day"(John 6:37, 39). |
Roman Catholics Have Another Jesus
Biblical Jesus Provides | Catholic Jesus Provides |
Eternal Life | Conditional Life |
Complete Forgiveness | Partial Forgiveness, Residual Sin Remains |
Permanent Right Standing With God | Lose Salvation when Commit a Mortal Sin |
Peace and Assurance | Uncertainty, Fear, Doubt, and False Hope |
No More Pain and Suffering In Heaven | A Painful Refiners Fire in Purgatory |
The teachings and doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church are compiled in a book called "Catechism of the Catholic Church." We will document its teaching by the numerical reference in the Catechism on the topic being discussed.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church stands, in the words of Pope John Paul II, as "a sure norm for teaching the faith" and an "authentic reference text."
Catholicism has another Jesus that does not satisfy divine justice, provide direct access to God, make believers saved and perfect forever, secure eternal salvation, and He did not finish the work of redemption.
Nine (9) Heresies Roman Catholics Believe About Jesus
ROMAN CATHOLIC JESUS | GOD'S WORD SAYS... |
1. Rome's Jesus Does Not Save Completely
| |
"In the treasury, too, are the prayers and good works of the saints...In this way, they attained their own salvation and at the same cooperated in saving their brothers." (1477) | "Truly, truly, I say to you, the one who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life" (John 5 24). |
2. Rome's Jesus Does Not Provide Eternal Life
| |
"Immediately after death the souls of those (once) justified by the sacraments who die in a state of mortal sin descent into hell, where they suffer the punishment of hell's eternal fire. (1035) | “Truly, truly, I say to you, the one who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life" (John 5:24). |
3. Rome's Jesus Did Not Cancel
the Sin Debt
| |
Indulgences (paying church for less time in purgatory) remit temporal punishments for sins for the living or the dead. (1471) The sinner must make "satisfaction for" or "expiate" (take away) his sins by doing penance (1459) | "For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all time; but the life that He lives, He lives to God" (Romans 6:10). "For Christ also suffered for sins once for all time, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit;(1 Peter 3:18). |
4, Rome's Jesus Did Not Purify
All Sins
| |
All who die in God's grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death, they undergo purification (through a purifying fire), so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter heaven" (1030-31) | "And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, (Hebrews 1:3). "who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, eager for good deeds" (Titus 2:14). |
5. Rome's Jesus Returns to Earth Every Day to Be Sacrificed and Eaten
"In the Eucharist, the body and blood, together with the soul and divinity, of our Lord Jesus Christ and, therefore, the whole Christ is truly and substantially contained (1347-78) | Christians receive Jesus once, spiritually in the heart. "Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith" (Ephesians 3:17). "Then if anyone says to you, ‘Behold, here is the Christ,’ or ‘He is over here,’ do not believe him" Matthew 24:23). |
Priest John O'Brian explains, "When the priest announces the words of consecration, he reaches up into the heavens, brings Christ down from His throne, and places Him upon our altar to be offered up again as the Victim for the sins of man. It is the power greater than that of saints and angels. The priest speaks to Christ, the eternal and omnipotent God bows his head in humble obedience to the priest's command." | Jesus "whom heaven must receive until the period of restoration of all things, about which God spoke by the mouths of His holy prophets from ancient times" (Acts 3:21). "so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him"(Hebrews 9:28). |
6. Rome's Jesus Did Not Finish the Work of Redemption
| |
"The sacrifice of Christ and the sacrifice of the Eucharist are one single sacrifice: The victim is one and the same. Christ who offered himself once in a bloody manner on the altar of the cross is contained and is offered in an unbloody manner." (1367) | When Jesus cried out "It is finished" the curtain of the temple was torn open giving believers access to God. (Matthew 27:51) "Every priest stands daily ministering and offering time after time the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins; but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of God" (Hebrews 10:11-12). |
The Same Sacrifice? Really! | Biblically Not the Same Sacrifice |
One Perfect and Sufficient Sacrifice | Thousands of Offerings Are Insufficient |
Offered by a Sinful Man | Offered by the Sinless Son of God |
Offered for the living and the dead | Offered for the Living |
For Past Sins Only | For All Sins |
Millions of Bloodless Sacrifices | One Bloody Sacrifice |
Must Be Repeated Daily | Unrepeatable |
7. Romes Jesus Did Not Redeem Man From the Law''s Curse
| |
"All men may obtain Salvation Through Faith, Baptism, and the Observance of Commandment." (2068) | "Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all the things written in the book of the Law, to do them.”..."Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us” (Galatians 3:10,13). |
8. Rome's Jesus is Not the Only Snless Mediator
"Without a single sin to restrain her ...she became the cause of salvation for herself and the whole human race." (494) (Mary) As Mediatrix, she "did not lay aside this saving office, but by her manifold intercession continues to bring us the gifts of eternal salvation." (969) | "For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus" (1 Timothy 2;5). "For this reason, He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the violations that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance" (Hebrews 9:15). |
9. Rome Says that Jesus is Not the Only Way to God
"The plan of salvation includes those who acknowledge to Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims," (841) Salvation is by faith PLUS: sacramentS (1129), Mass (1405), purgatory, (1030), penance (980), indulgences (1498), infant baptism (1256), law=keeping ((2068), and good works (2016). | "Jesus *said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me" (John 14:6). "The one who believes in the Son has eternal life, but the one who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.”(John 3:36). |
"The one who believes in Him is not judged; the one who does not believe has been judged already because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God" (John 3{18).
